Punjab Public Service Commission - Guidance and My Experience

I've been getting a lot of requests to write a guide about Punjab Public Service Commission. This will help you better understand the preparation and execution required to succeed through this exam. I took the exam 2 years ago so the format and the exam marking scheme may have changed, so please consult the website for more authentic information. Closing date to apply for this term is 30-11-2017.

Read all details about this term on the PPSC website: http://ppsc.gop.pk

I will write my experience which will serve as a general guide to help doctors applying in any term. My experience in no way should be taken as a sure-shot guidance for the exam. People have different experiences in this exam and no single experience is to be considered as a gold standard.

Written Exam
There was no written test in my time. And usually there isn't any written part. You never know though. General knowledge and basic medical and dental knowledge is the way to go here.

Interview

The interview decides whether you will be selected for the job or not.

Past Result History
They take your documents, from Matric to Dental Graduation. There are marks for every step and if you have scored good marks in Matric and FSc., it's a plus point. If you have a supplee in any or the four years, it will go against your portfolio.

Format
There are usually two dentists, and three government personnelles in the interview committee. They all ask different questions in their turn and they also talk to you to access your confidence level and professionalism.

- Dentists
The dentists ask dentistry related questions. There are so many interviews going on at the same time due to which there are different dentists in different rooms taking interviews from different candidates. What I experienced was there was no general trend in asking questions. Doctors asked questions related to their fields, for example, a prosthodontist will ask questions related to prostho, a maxillofacial surgeon will ask questions related to surgery. This is pure luck and you can get any doctors. In my time, different people asked all sorts of questions. Some very basic and easy, and some very difficult. A surgeon was asking questions related to Le Fort Fractures, there were questions like describe parts of removable partial denture, etc.

There is no way to predict what questions will be asked or what important topics to study as  there are no many doctors with different tastes in questions.

- The Government People
These people will ask all sorts of questions depending on their knowledge. Some very stupid questions and some very good questions. I won't comment on this much as I am assuming you guys are aware of the standards and ethics of Pakistani Bureaucrats. You should have a grip on current affairs, you should know the names of President, Prime Minister, Health Minister, etc.

Some questions asked by the non healthcare professionals are listed below:

  • If you are sent to a far off place out of Lahore, will you be willing to take the job?
  • If you are sent to a village with no sterilization facility, how will you manage your patients?
  • What is happening in Syria?
  • Who is the finance minister of Pakistan?
  • What is the name of the Chief Minister of Balochistan?
  • What if your husband lives in Lahore and you are posted outside of Lahore?
  • Will you do post graduation after your job?
  • How will you manage patient complaints?
  • If the facility you're posted at has deficiencies, how will you convey it to the government?
  • What do you think about YDA?
  • Are you a part of any organizations such as YDA?
  • Are you already practicing somewhere?

They will also ask general questions about your work, your family, your father's occupation, your aims and hobbies, etc.

Preparation Guideline for PPSC Interview
This is not an exam for which you can prepare in a month or two. Or as a matter of fact, ever. You just have to know the answers to the basic dentistry questions and rest all rests on the interviewer. If there is one book that I would recommend, it's Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry.

Role of sifarish
I had no sifarish going into the exam. There are people who have 'sifarish' and there are people who have been rejected with 'sifarish'. But I also do know people, friends, who have been selected because of sifarish. So, I won't say sifarish is an absolute must. I have been selected without one. And there are others too who didn't have any. So, no need to be discouraged that if you don't have a sifarish you won't get selected. But of course, if you have the right sifarish, you will have a plus point. #screwoursystem

Role of CV
CV plays a vital role in the interview. If you have a well prepared CV with good research work, it will help you.

So, the long story short, the following are positive points in order to get selected for PPSC,

  1. Good Academic Record (with good marks in all exams from Matric to BDS)
  2. Good CV
  3. Confidence and good communication skills
  4. Basic Dentistry Knowledge
  5. LUCK
My Experience
I went in with a state of mind that I don't have a sifarish and there's no way that I can get the job. I had a 5 page long CV ready with me. And I went in for the first time in my life with zero tension and a hundred percent confidence level. This was the best interview I ever did. To be honest, my academic record is above average. I did well in Matriculation and Intermediate exams. I had a handful of research work and extracurricular activities, including the Student of the Year Award which could have been the reason for my selection. Other than that, I was asked the same basic questions that all of the others were being asked. The only difference between me and the others was my CV....and maybe luck. When Allah wants something for you, He makes it happen.

You must be looking for a better guide with more details, but here's what you can get from my post: There is no definite guide for this exam. The five points I've mentioned are the main points to get selected, with LUCK being the deciding factor.

Thus, best of luck! :p
