Saving lives by saving smiles

- Stacey Haberberger

Many people think of toothbrushes as an everyday hygiene item, with little thought as to the cost or availability. Many people can go to a store and buy one or several and still have money to eat, without having to choose. People in third world countries, don’t have this luxury. Many people risk developing fungal infections and oral cancer due to bad oral hygiene. Many areas in Madagascar lack proper dental care and dentists and many are afraid to visit a dentist. Some dentists are poorly trained and do not have access to sanitary equipment or modern pain medications. People that are lucky to find a dentist, may have to walk many hours or find public transportation as many live in remote areas of the country.

Many people in Madagascar are smokers, without proper education and access to dental supplies, they also risk having gum disease and bad breath. Poor dental care can lead to many other health issues besides dental. People also risk infection from bad teeth which can lead to heart problems and also strokes. Gum disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth that can be easily managed in the United States. However, many people in Madagascar are at a higher risk of getting gum disease due to poor dental care, education and hygiene. Many, when asked, own a toothbrush but do not have toothpaste. 1 in 5 children and adults come from households that do not own a toothbrush, or one toothbrush must be shared amongst many. While these items are plentiful and readily available in richer countries and tourist areas, these items are considered a luxury to those in the poorer areas of Madagascar.

Many people with poor teeth are unable to eat, they have troubles chewing and swallowing many foods, this also can lead to many health issues that are not seen. Many do not have access to proper care nor do they have the money to receive even the most mediocre care available. Dental care is usually reserved for the wealthiest of the country and those that cannot afford or are not properly educated, are left to suffer in silence.

When a toothbrush is donated, it provides a person the ability to keep their mouth healthy for 3 months, and hopefully instill a desire to want to keep up with the care. Though many people have to choose between a toothbrush or food, many don’t realize that with poor dental health, they will eventually be unable to  chew or properly digest their food. And this can cause further health issues later in life.
