Practice Dentistry in Sweden | Becoming a dentist in Sweden for International Dentists

- Mahreen Marghoob

Those of you interested in getting a Swedish dental license, here is a summarized version of facts and tips:

1. Education is NOT FREE in sweden

Yes you read it right. Among Scandinavian countries, only Norway is fee free.

2. Living expenses

While choosing a course here don't just count in fee but also accommodation and grocery cost per month (which if you live in a basic room in shared apartment will cost 3000-5000 kr in Stockholm) can be a bit lesser in other cities. Grocery can cost 2000-3000 kr if you are not a LAHORI and not a KHABBA fan😂

3. Language

Swedish language C1 level is required to start you dental license journey. Six years back when I searched for Swedish language course, I found just one private course in Lahore near gymkhana that asked 1 lac for a 3 weeks course and that was 6 years ago!

4. Accreditation/Equivalence of degrees

Get equivalence of your degrees checked from Socialstyrelsen (The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare) in Sweden. You can register online first on https://www.socialstyrelsen.se/  and then can send attested copies of degrees via post to them. Required list is available on their website.

5. What Next!

When done with language and degree equivalence there are 2 paths:

A. 1 Year Extensive Course

A one year extensive course offered by 3 universities in sweden
Karolinska Instituite Stockholm
Sahlgranska University Gothenburg
Malmo university
Each university have 16 seats every year and selection is just your luck

B. Basic Knowledge Exam

Go for basic knowledge exam which is divided in 4 parts:
Basic knowledge (anatomi physiologi biochem)
Pedodonti
Adult dentistry (endo , cariology, parodontology, radiology, restorative dentistry)
Practical part+6 months practice in some clinic here

And that's it... you get license and can start job hunt or even open your own clinic!

Yes they require dentists but they have a strict criteria for selection. Might sound complicated but it's actually not.

TIP: To get student visa apply for World Health Master Programme offered by Uppsala University. 80-100% scholarships offered for this program every year or find some Phd.
Best of luck!
