How to raise a flap with periosteal elevator [VIDEO]

The main principle of successful surgery is proper access and visibility. Sometimes during tooth extraction the broken root fragment is hidden below the gingival level and we often try to find an engagement point blindly. A periosteal elevator can be used to raise a little flap to visualize the root properly. A straight elevator or a forcep can then be placed with confidence and the root fragment can easily be extracted.

  8. Instruments for cutting the mucoperiosteum: The mucoperiosteum is typically cut with a No. 15 scalpel blade attached to a No. 3 Bard Parker handle. Some dentists advise using the No. 12 curved blade for the buccal cervical border as well as the posterior cut distal to the third tooth. Use caution while using the sharp No. 11 scalpel blade so as not to accidentally harm the buccal mucosa or mouth angle.
